Hattiesburg, MS –
The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team needed
eight innings but came away with their twentieth victory of
the season with a 9-8 win over Jackson State University on
day two of the 2009 SWAC softball tournament.
Southern (20-19) saw JSU take a 2-0 lead after the first
inning but the Lady Jags quickly erased that with three runs
of their own in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the second inning Jackson Wendi Reed
hit a two run homer over the center field fence to give the
Lady Tigers a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the second sophomore Victoria
Stewart flied out and scored sophomore Kesha Tauriac.
Senior Lauren Dodd came up next and flied out to
score freshman Audrey Phillips to give the Blue and Gold a
5-4 lead.
Neither team scored until the sixth when Jackson State
scored two in the top of the inning and two in the seventh
inning. The
Blue and Gold scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth,
one in the seventh to tie the score at 8-8 and one in the
bottom of the eighth to take the victory and advance to the
semifinals.
Stewart led the team at the plate with two hits, two runs,
and an RBI.
Junior Aruba Nicholas went 1 for 3 with two runs and a walk.
SU will face the Mississippi Valley State University
Devilettes at 12:00 pm on Saturday, April24, in day three of
the 2009 SWAC softball post season tournament.
