Baton Rouge, LA – The Southern
University Lady Jaguars softball team completed the sweep of
Texas Southern University 8-4 and 10-3 in their final two
contest of the year.
Southern (18-19, 11-5) wins their sixth
straight Western Division Southwestern Athletic Conference
crown and their eighth overall.
Pitcher Lanaya Jenkins was the driving force behind
both victories today.
After head coach Nancy Marshall was
recognized by the mayor president Kip Holden and Louisiana
House of Representatives member Avon Henry for winning her
300th contest and becoming the winningest coach
in SWAC softball, SU got to work.
In the first game Jenkins struck out
three and allowed three runs but the defense backed her up
as the Blue and Gold won their second straight 8-4.
Seven different Jags recorded a run but sophomore
Victoria Stewart totaled three hits, a run and a RBI.
Junior Brittany Hymes finished the game 2 for 4 with
a run while sophomore Kasha Tauriac ended the game with two
RBI’s and a run.
The second game saw freshman Caroline
Myers on the mound for the first time this weekend.
After the first inning SU held a 4-0 lead and was
looking to cruise to another victory but TSU had other plans
as they rallied in the top of the third inning to pull
within one with a 4-3 score going into the bottom of the
third. Jenkins
came in at that time and held
Texas
Southern in check.
The Seattle,
Washington native gave up a hit and a
walk after striking out one.
The Lady Jaguars continued to assault TSU’s pitcher
Katie Ortiz adding three runs in the fourth and fifth
innings to grab their third straight victory in the final
regular season contest.
Senior Lauren Dodd, who was playing her final
contest, finished the game with two singles, a triple, two
RBI’s and a run in her final home game in the Blue and Gold.
SU recorded their twelfth game of the
season with double digit hits totaling 16.
Southern ends the year in first place
in the Western division, where they were picked to finish.
Coach Nancy Marshall will compete for her third SWAC
championship on next week when they travel to
Hattiesburg,
Mississippi to participate in the
2009 SWAC softball postseason tournament.
Games start on Thursday, April 23.
