The SU
softball team fell to the University of Arkansas at
Monticello
in non-conference play by final scores of 5-0 and 11-3.
In
the first game Southern (12-15, 5-3 SWAC) only managed three
hits against the division II powerhouse.
Junior pitcher Lanaya Jenkins held UAM scoreless
until the bottom of the fifth inning when
Arkansas-Monticello scored all five runs of the contest.
Freshman Audrey Phillips, sophomore Jasmine Tillman
and junior Aruba Nicholas finished the game with one hit.
Game
two started a lot better for the Lady Jags as they opened
the with a 2-0 lead.
UAM scored six-runs in the second, one in the third
and four in the fourth to complete the sweep over SU after
five innings.
Southern did put one more run on the scoreboard in the top
of the fourth but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the 24-3
record squad.
Phillips ended the game with two hits, a run and a RBI.
Sophomore Chastoni Jones recorded a run while
sophomore Kasha Tauriac scored the final run of the contest
for SU.
The
Blue and Gold continue their road trip as they return to
SWAC action when they venture into Pine Bluff, Arkansas to
take on the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Lady Lions
in a three game conference set.
The games are set for Friday, March 27 at 6:00 pm
while Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 12:00 and 2:00 pm.
