The Southern University Lady Jaguars
softball team split on the second day of the Southwestern
Athletic Conference softball roundup.
SU fell to Alabama State University 5-3 then
rebounded by defeating Jackson State University 8-2.
Southern (7-9) could not stop the Lady
Hornets’ 12-hit attack which led them to the victory over
the Blue and Gold.
Five different Lady Hornets recorded a
run for ASU with a pair in the second and single runs in the
fourth, fifth and six innings to open a 5-0 lead after five
innings.
Southern made a late rally with a score
in the sixth and two runs in the seventh.
Junior Aruba Nicholas and senior Lauren Dodd each had
two hits for the Lady Jags.
In SU’s second contest they were able
to open up their own 5-0 lead with three runs in the first
inning and two in the second. After Jackson State scored a
pair of scores in the bottom of the sixth, SU came back with
three of their own in the seventh to move head coach Nancy
Marshall within five victories of her 300th
career win.
Sophomore’s Victoria Stewart and
Chastoni Jones each had three hits to lead Southern.
Junior Lanaya Jenkins pitched six
innings to get the win for the Lady Jaguars, walking two and
striking out five.
SU concludes the roundup on Sunday,
March 9, with Mississippi Valley State University at 11:30
am and Alcorn State University at 2:00 pm.
