March 6, 2009 - Hattiesburg, MS - The Southern University softball team defeated Alabama A&M University 5-3 in the Lady Jaguars opening game of the 2009 SWAC softball roundup.

Sophomore Chastoni Jones, Junior Aruba Nicholas and sophomore Kasha Tauriac each had two hits as the Blue and Gold downed Alabama A&M.

Trailing 1-0, the Jaguars scored all their runs in the middle three innings. Brittany Hymes’ two-run triple in the fourth put Southern out front.

After an RBI triple by A&M’s Re’Quincia Mack in the top of the fifth, tied the game for the Bulldogs, Southern took the lead for good on a pair of RBI singles by Jones and sophomore Victoria Stewart.

SU will face Alabama State University at 10:00 am and Jackson State University at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 7 in the second day of the SWAC roundup.
