The Southern Jaguars softball team scored three runs in
seventh inning to give SU the upset win over previously
unbeaten #15 UL-Lafayette today, 5-4, in the Cowgirl Classic
Tournament hosted by McNeese State.
It was a signature win for the Southern sfotball program,
that came into the game 1-10.
ULL had outscored their opponents 135-3 so far this
season. In Southern's only other matchup with ULL in the
programs history, the Ragin Cajuna had delivered a whopping
35-1 loss to Southern in March of 2000.
Michael Pless picked up the win for Southern. Southern’s
Victoria
Stewart went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
The Cajuns scored their four runs in the first two
innings and then put their bats into the freezer. Then they
helped the Jags get the runs they needed.
Trailing 4-2 entering the seventh, Southern got
back-to-back hit batsmen from losing pitcher Christina
Hamilton. A fielder’s choice/error loaded the bases. Then
Audrey
Phillips unloaded them with a three run double to give
the Jags the lead and make a winner of starting pitcher
Michael Pless. Hamilton struck out 16 and allowed four hits
in the game.
The shell-shocked Cajuns went meekly in the bottom of the
seventh, with Christi Orgeron looking at a called third
strike to end the game.
