SU SOFTBALL RESCHEDULES CONTEST
 
March 23, 2010 - Baton Rouge, LA - The Southern University Lady Jaguars softball team has rescheduled their March 22, contest with Miles College.  The contest scheduled for 2 and 4 pm today has been moved due to Southern’s finishing the 2010 SWAC softball roundup on Monday in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Southern (3-18, 3-2 SWAC) fell to Alabama State University this morning 2-1 in a contest that saw the Lady Jaguars post three hits.  Freshman Shawntall Steamer, junior Kasha Tauriac, and sophomore Chastoni Jones each recorded a hit while Steamer posted the lone run and Tauriac was responsible for the run batted in.
 
Senior pitcher Lanaya Jenkins posted a season high eight strikeouts.  The three year starter gave up six hits, two earn runs and three walks in her fourth lost of the season.
 
In the final match of the day SU faced Alabama A&M University.  For the first time this season the Blue and Gold recorded a season high 16 runs off of 11 hits.  Southern posted six stolen bases a season high, two doubles, a triple, and a homerun.
 
A&M’s starting pitcher Melanie Menchaca gave up 10 hits, 13 runs, 10 earn runs, and four walks in route to her first lost of the season.
 
SU’s Caroline Myers posted her 14th appearance with the start and was relived of duties after three innings, five hits and two runs.  Freshman Joei Glynn came in and faced 12 batters giving up four hits, and six earn runs.  Jenkins then returned to the mound and closed out the Lady Bulldogs after five at bats.
As the home team the Blue and Gold scored a run in the second, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and nine in the sixth inning to overcome A&M.  After five innings the Lady Bulldogs held an 8-7 lead before the offensive explosion by SU in the bottom of the sixth.  The nine runs scored in the inning is a first for Southern this season and the most in any inning this year.
The win gives SU a winning record in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The game versus Miles College will be replayed at a later date.
SU’s next contest will be on Wednesday, March 24 when they host Northwestern State University at 2:00 pm at Lady Jaguar field.  The event is free and open to the public.
